Smith Micro and Stoke Certify End-to-End Solution for Maintaining Secure Mobile Connections Across Wireless Networks
Interoperability Tests of Smith Micro's Mobile Network Director Client With Stoke's Wi-Fi eXchange Gateway Deliver Consistently, High Quality Data Offload for Carriers
ALISO VIEJO, CA--(Marketwire - Feb 13, 2012) - [ Smith Micro Software, Inc. ] (
Smith Micro's Mobile Network Director (MND) helps mobile network operators optimize network resources by directing data traffic from mobile devices to 3G, 4G and Wi-Fi networks based on policies and real-time conditions. Optimized for multimedia data services, the Wi-Fi eXchange enables operators to efficiently route data traffic from 3G/4G to Wi-Fi networks to avoid potential performance bottlenecks. Working together, these solutions provide subscribers with a smooth, seamless experience as they move between network technologies, while maintaining secure access to a mobile operator's core network.
While both solutions can operate stand-alone, the value of adding the MND client to any data offload strategy includes:
1. Dynamic, more efficient offloading of data traffic based on real-time user activity and off-network conditions
2. Security and authentication over un-trusted networks, such as the user's home Wi-Fi network
3. Valuable insight into connection behavior, even off of the carrier network, to gauge user experience and fine-tune offload policies
4. Using the computing power of the device to make intelligent offloading decisions without generating network traffic or consuming valuable core network resources
According to [ David Sperling, CTO ] at Smith Micro, "Maintaining a high quality user experience is critical for operators as they look for ways to relieve network congestion with data offload. By implementing our Mobile Network Director client with Stoke's advanced gateway solution, operators can ensure a seamless, secure experience for subscribers regardless of the network used to carry the data traffic."
[ Dave Williams, CTO ] at Stoke, added, "This validation process provides an important assurance to mobile network operators that they can confidently deploy Smith Micro's intelligent traffic management client with the Stoke Wi-Fi eXchange to create a robust, end-to-end data offload solution. This allows operators to maintain iron clad security and give subscribers consistent access to their services, even when they are not on the cellular access network."
The interoperability certification included I-WLAN interoperability testing, demonstrating compliance to rigorous 3GPP standards for credential-based authentication, carrier-grade encryption and IP packet integrity while transmitting traffic to and from the network core. In addition, it covered testing of the wireless protocol IETF MOBIKE, which allows mobile devices to maintain a persistent security tunnel to network core resources, particularly important in wireless environments with low or unstable signal quality, or when mobile devices roam among wireless networks with different IP address assignments. Support for MOBIKE is an advanced feature of Stoke's gateway solution, and now supported by the MND client.
