Ikanos Communications: Ikanos Supports ITU-T Approval of G.hn Standard for Wired Home Networking
FREMONT, CA--(Marketwire - October 12, 2009) - Ikanos Communications, Inc. (
"ITU-T achieved a major milestone in next-generation wired home networking at its most recent meeting in Geneva. By advancing key components of G.hn toward completion, ITU-T is making rapid progress on this standard which will greatly improve broadband service delivery throughout the home," said Debu Pal, senior vice president and CTO at Ikanos. "G.hn unified home networking technology is a critical component that service providers must have for their next wave of high-speed data and multimedia services offerings. We fully support the efforts of ITU-T and HomeGrid Forum in bringing this standard to market."
In addition to the approval of the G.hn Foundation and Physical Layer standard, ITU-T gave Consent to the complementary Recommendation G.9972 for coexistence between G.hn-based products and other powerline networking standards. The Data Link Layer (DLL) portion of the G.hn standard was deemed stable and is expected to reach Consent at the January 2010 ITU-T meeting. This meeting marks another step in the steady adoption of G.hn and reaffirms the desire to unite a fragmented industry which currently uses a variety of incompatible technologies that typically address only single types of household wiring options.
As a single worldwide standard, G.hn is intended to unify the networking of content to devices over any wire -- coax cable, phone or power line. This technology will enable service providers to deploy new offerings, including IPTV, more cost effectively; allow consumer electronics manufacturers to network all types of entertainment, home automation, and security products throughout the house; and greatly simplify consumers purchasing and installation processes.
About G.hn
The members of the ITU-T's G.hn Rapporteur Group have created a specification for a single MAC/PHY technology which can run over coaxial cable, phone lines or power lines. G.hn participants include service providers, consumer electronics and information technology manufacturers, and component and intellectual property providers from around the world.
