ARMONK, NY--(Marketwire - April 2, 2009) - IBM (NYSE: [ IBM ]) today announced that NACCO Materials Handling Group, Inc. (NMHG), one of the world's largest lift truck manufacturers, turned to IBM to improve its worldwide access to business information, better address its compliance requirements and streamline business process. Using IBM software, NMHG was able to reduce the time to retrieve and manage documents, such as engineering drawings and legal contracts, from 30 days to 1 day, significantly improving the productivity of its global teams with operations in 14 countries.

Prior to the implementation, NMHG managers kept manual copies of all documents and legal contracts in various locations and it was not uncommon for an employee to spend hours searching for a specific document. With the IBM enterprise content management (ECM) software, all manual work of preparing microfilm cards was eliminated and company engineers were able to access the drawings instantly on their desktop computers. NMHG now has a central system in place, providing employees worldwide access to all critical information and better control over its corporate records with almost instant access.

"In our work environment, we are constantly trying to reduce cycle times, and we were able to reduce ours from 30 days to implementation the very next day," said Gidu Sriram, director of IT applications, NMHG. "This was a significant change that enabled us to respond more quickly to user demands, gain control over our information and become more efficient with our business processes."

NMHG realized the initial investment made in the IBM solution had potential well beyond the engineering application. The company is now gaining greater efficiencies by adding compliance capabilities to the ECM system.

The IBM solution is helping NMHG to maintain its regulatory compliance requirements by storing finished finance reports and supporting records for proper retention in a central ECM repository. NMHG is now able to easily access signed copies of important critical business documents, such as contracts, and provide reminders to contract owners as expiration dates approach.

"Business users have become much more involved in directing and owning their end applications and solutions, and our customers are working closely with us and our business partners to maximize their IBM ECM investments," said Ken Bisconti, vice president, products and strategy, IBM Enterprise Content Management. "By applying the basic principles of agile ECM, companies can leverage software in new, innovative ways that help reduce costs and improve customer service, helping them to manage their critical information in smarter ways."

As clients continue to seek smarter use of their technology investments, IBM ECM is helping customers realize the benefits of having open, standards-based solutions built on a unified platform, which improves efficiency and return on investment. IBM's ECM portfolio provides flexibility in a services oriented, compliant environment to help empower business users, shorten time to value and to respond to changing requirements. Helping organizations achieve greater business agility, IBM ECM delivers solutions to proactively solve increasingly complex business problems, enabling them to build a solution in days versus months.

IBM's ECM software addresses the demands of globally distributed enterprises that demand scalable, extensible technologies and supports the company's Smarter Planet initiative, which recognizes the need for improved information access, quality and insight.

NMHG is using IBM FileNet Content Manager, IBM FileNet Content Services, IBM FileNet Records Crawler and IBM FileNet Records Manager.
