MSU Launches Online Hemp Degree to Fill Industry Skills Gap
Locale: UNITED STATES

Starkville, MS - March 17, 2026 - Mississippi State University (MSU) is poised to become a national leader in industrial hemp education with the launch of its fully online Bachelor of Science degree program in Industrial Hemp, beginning in Fall 2026. This innovative program responds directly to the rapid growth and increasing complexity of the American hemp industry, offering a comprehensive curriculum designed to equip students with the skills needed to thrive in this dynamic field.
With the legalization of industrial hemp through the 2018 Farm Bill, the sector has exploded, moving beyond a niche market to become a significant component of American agriculture. However, this rapid expansion has revealed a critical gap: a shortage of skilled professionals capable of navigating the intricacies of hemp cultivation, processing, and marketing. MSU's program directly addresses this need, providing accessible education to students domestically and internationally.
"We want to be a leader in industrial hemp education and research," stated interim Dean Pradeep Accabatti of the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Veterinary Medicine. "This program isn't just about teaching students how to grow hemp; it's about providing a holistic understanding of the entire value chain, from seed genetics to finished product and everything in between."
The curriculum is designed to be comprehensive, covering the entire lifecycle of the industrial hemp plant. Core courses will delve into plant science, focusing on hemp botany, physiology, and genetics. Students will gain a solid foundation in agronomy, learning optimal cultivation practices tailored to different climates and production systems. Key components will also include instruction in modern hemp processing techniques - extracting valuable compounds like CBD, CBG, and other cannabinoids - and the associated quality control measures.
Beyond the agricultural and scientific aspects, the program places significant emphasis on the business and regulatory landscape of the hemp industry. Students will study marketing strategies, supply chain management, and the constantly evolving legal framework surrounding hemp production and sales. Understanding these regulations, which vary significantly by state and can change frequently, is crucial for success in the field. The curriculum will cover topics like navigating interstate commerce, ensuring compliance with FDA regulations concerning hemp-derived products, and understanding the implications of future federal legislation.
MSU is among the first universities in the nation to offer a fully online bachelor's degree specifically focused on industrial hemp. Several institutions have incorporated hemp-related modules into broader agricultural programs, but MSU's dedicated degree offers a depth and breadth of knowledge unmatched by these introductory courses. This focus allows students to develop specialized expertise and become highly sought-after candidates in a competitive job market.
The potential career paths for graduates of the program are diverse. Opportunities range from hemp farm management and cultivation to roles in processing facilities, quality control laboratories, and marketing/sales organizations. Demand is also growing for professionals in research and development, focusing on new hemp varieties, improved processing technologies, and the exploration of novel hemp-based products. Further opportunities exist in regulatory affairs, ensuring compliance with evolving legal standards, and in consulting roles, advising businesses on best practices for hemp production and marketing.
The fully online format of the program is designed for flexibility, catering to working professionals, those with geographic limitations, and students seeking a self-paced learning environment. MSU is investing heavily in online learning infrastructure and resources to ensure a high-quality educational experience. This includes interactive simulations, virtual lab experiences, and access to a network of industry professionals.
As the industrial hemp industry continues to mature, the need for a highly skilled workforce will only intensify. Mississippi State University's new degree program is strategically positioned to meet this demand, solidifying its role as a leader in agricultural innovation and preparing the next generation of hemp industry professionals.
