Beyond Deir ez-Zor: A Wider Regional Threat
The resurgence of ISIS isn't confined to Syria. We're seeing increased activity in Iraq, particularly in rural areas, and concerns are growing about the group's ability to exploit instability in other parts of the Middle East and Africa. The chaotic withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan in 2021 arguably created a vacuum that allowed some ISIS fighters and ideology to spread. The ongoing conflicts in Yemen, Libya, and the Sahel region further exacerbate the problem, providing opportunities for ISIS to recruit, train, and operate with relative impunity.
The group's online propaganda network remains highly effective, and it continues to radicalize and inspire individuals around the world. Even without controlling vast territories, ISIS can still pose a significant threat through coordinated attacks, cyber warfare, and the dissemination of extremist ideologies. The recent attacks claimed by ISIS in Iran and Pakistan demonstrate its expanding reach and ambition. These attacks, targeting Shia Muslims, indicate a continued sectarian agenda aimed at fueling regional tensions.
The Role of External Actors
The fight against ISIS requires a coordinated international effort. However, geopolitical rivalries and conflicting interests often hinder effective cooperation. Turkey's focus on combating Kurdish groups in Syria, for example, sometimes overshadows the threat posed by ISIS. The Syrian government, while ostensibly fighting against ISIS, has also been accused of allowing the group to operate in certain areas to justify its own actions. The US-led coalition continues to provide air support and training to the SDF, but the future of this partnership remains uncertain. A sustainable solution requires addressing the root causes of extremism - poverty, political grievances, and lack of opportunity - and fostering inclusive governance structures that can provide security and prosperity for all Syrians.

Ignoring this resurgence would be a grave mistake, with potentially catastrophic consequences for Syria, the wider region, and international security.
