The development could pave the way for better treatment for human patients who currently face long waits for transplants.
Chinese scientists have successfully kept a monkey alive for six months using a kidney from a gene-edited pig, marking a significant advancement in xenotransplantation. This experiment, conducted by researchers from the Guangzhou Institutes of Biomedicine and Health, involved editing 69 genes in the pig to reduce the risk of rejection and to make the organ more compatible with the primate's immune system. The monkey, which received the transplant, showed no signs of rejection and maintained stable kidney function throughout the study period. This breakthrough could pave the way for future clinical trials in humans, offering hope for addressing the critical shortage of human organs available for transplant. The study highlights the potential of gene editing in overcoming the immunological barriers that have historically made cross-species organ transplants challenging.
