Scientists Develop New Type of Battery That Could Provide Energy on Mars

USTC researchers created a high-energy battery using Mars' CO2-rich atmosphere, showing potential for long-lasting energy solutions in Martian environments. A research team led by Prof. Peng Tan from the (USTC),
Scientists at the University of Cambridge have developed a new type of battery that could potentially power future missions to Mars. This innovative battery uses a form of calcium metal, which is abundant on Mars, as its anode. The battery's design leverages the planet's natural resources, specifically iron and sulfur, to create a calcium-sulfur battery. This approach not only reduces the need to transport heavy batteries from Earth but also utilizes Martian materials, making it more cost-effective and sustainable for long-term exploration. The battery has shown promising results in terms of energy density and stability, although further research is needed to enhance its cycle life and efficiency for practical use in harsh Martian conditions. This development marks a significant step towards self-sustaining energy solutions for extraterrestrial environments.
