The Dependency Dilemma and the Apple Factor

At the heart of Qualcomm's current valuation is the "Edge AI" thesis. While NVIDIA dominates the data center and cloud AI space, Qualcomm is betting that the future of AI will be distributed. The ability to run Large Language Models (LLMs) locally on a phone, laptop, or car—without needing a constant connection to a massive server farm—is a significant competitive advantage.
By optimizing its hardware for on-device AI, Qualcomm is attempting to move up the value chain. This transition shifts the company from being a component supplier to becoming an essential infrastructure provider for the AI era.
