Affordable high-capacity system enables high-speed access, HD video wherever the news breaks

CARLSBAD, Calif., April 12, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Broadcast journalists now have a new way to capture, edit, and deliver full HD stories from the field that is more affordable than traditional satellite services and reaches beyond the boundaries of microwave. Exede(SM) Newsgathering is a first-of-its-kind service based on the transformational new satellite system created by ViaSat Inc. (NASDAQ: VSAT). Terminals can either be vehicle-mounted or transported in a luggage-sized carrying case. The service is available in the U.S. now on a select basis with general availability by the end of this year.

"This new service on the Exede network platform builds on the January launch of our transformational broadband network," said Stephanie Copeland, COO for the ViaSat services group. "Now we're extending the economic and performance benefits of high-capacity Ka-band satellites to portable and nomadic applications, and national broadcasters involved in our initial trials are providing great feedback."

High-capacity satellite broadens the opportunities for news gathering:

  • Affordable bandwidth, compact terminals, and smaller vehicles enable more reporters to be in more places at once within the same budget
  • Bandwidth capacity "depth" reduces the need to compete for limited bandwidth with other on-scene reporters, unlike the limited, thin layer of coverage provided by microwave and other technologies

Teams can capture breaking news and build stories in metropolitan areas, at remote sites, or even in the event of a natural disaster when there is no electricity, cell connections, or vehicle access:

  • Transmit full HD video
  • Receive additional footage from the station
  • Two-way high-speed broadband connection for crew communications and workflow
  • Enrich news content and submit a complete package right from the field

See Exede Newsgathering at the NAB 2012 show in Las Vegas, April 16-19. On display will be a news van in booth OE1548, and a small crew vehicle and portable terminal in Central Plaza near the main show entrance.
