The panel discussion will examine the importance of packet timing synchronization in next generation power system applications. The PTP IEEE1588v2 protocol has been identified as the future intelligent vehicle that will carry and distribute timing over IP network. The packet nature and the intelligence of the PTP protocol shall improve performance, remote management and provides efficient and easier access to a better timing reference. Performance and the challenges of this new protocol with regard to utility telecom network and performance objectives will be reviewed. The vision on the development of PTP IEEE1588 to address customer needs for a stable PTP/IRIGB signal that meets the requirements of NPCC / NERC with performance of better than one millisecond will also be shared during this discussion.
