ACS To Provide North Carolina Turnpike Authority with First Roadside Toll Collection System

DALLAS--([ BUSINESS WIRE ])--[ Affiliated Computer Services, Inc ]. (NYSE: ACS) today announced it will provide the [ North Carolina Turnpike Authority ] (NCTA) with its first roadside toll collection system (RTCS) and related statewide toll back office system (BOS) under two contracts, valued at about $22 million.

ACS will design, install and maintain an advanced electronic RTCS in 64 automated tolling lanes at 11 tolling points as a part of the Triangle Expressway toll project in Wake and Durham counties. ACS will also provide a toll customer and revenue management back office system which will support the Triangle Expressway toll project.

ACS' unique toll system design provides a fully automated and accountable [ all-electronic toll ] (AET) revenue collection system for the multi-lane Triangle Expressway tollroad without using toll booths. This innovative open road toll design automatically tracks and tolls vehicles using overhead gantry-based equipment and roadway sensors. The system is based on the use of car-mounted Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)-based transponders and camera-based license plate reading systems.

The design is highly cost-efficient, fully accountable and promotes a safer traveling experience to help reduce vehicle emissions. The technology for both the Triangle Expressway roadside toll collection system and the [ back office system ] is based on ACS' proprietary VECTOR toll system design. This design already has been proven in hundreds of other open-road toll systems throughout the United States.
