UW-Whitewater Launches AI Bachelor's Degree
Locale: UNITED STATES

Whitewater, WI - February 4th, 2026 - The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater officially launched its Bachelor of Science degree in Artificial Intelligence today, marking a significant step in the University of Wisconsin System's ambitious plan to become a leader in AI education and implementation. The program, slated to begin accepting students this fall, comes at a time of explosive growth in the demand for skilled AI professionals and reflects a broader national trend towards integrating artificial intelligence into higher education.
UW-Whitewater's new major isn't an isolated incident. It's a key component of a system-wide initiative spearheaded by UW System President Jay Rothman to equip both students and employees with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate - and thrive in - an increasingly AI-driven world. Rothman, speaking at a press conference earlier today, emphasized the transformative potential of AI, stating, "AI isn't just a technological advancement; it's a paradigm shift. We have a responsibility to ensure our universities are at the forefront of this revolution, preparing our students not just for jobs that exist today, but for the jobs of tomorrow - many of which haven't even been conceived yet."
The UW-Whitewater program distinguishes itself through its focus on applied AI. Unlike more theoretical programs, the curriculum emphasizes practical skills in mathematics and computing, enabling graduates to immediately contribute to the workforce. Students will have the opportunity to specialize in high-demand areas including data science, machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing, and robotics. Dr. Scott Pfeiffer, Professor of Computer Science and the program's lead architect, explained the rationale behind this approach. "We're not just teaching the theory of AI; we're teaching students how to build things with it. The program is designed to be intensely hands-on, with numerous opportunities for students to work on real-world projects."
Beyond the creation of this dedicated major, the UW System is undertaking a multi-pronged approach to AI integration. This includes comprehensive AI literacy training for faculty and staff, designed to foster understanding and responsible implementation across all disciplines. The System is also actively exploring innovative uses of AI to streamline research processes, improve operational efficiency, and enhance the student experience. For instance, several UW campuses are piloting AI-powered tutoring systems and personalized learning platforms.
However, the System acknowledges that the rapid advancement of AI necessitates careful consideration of ethical implications. UW-Madison, for example, is actively soliciting input from students, faculty, and the broader community to develop a robust AI policy that addresses issues of bias, privacy, and accountability. (See [ UW-Madison seeks input on AI policy ]). This commitment to ethical AI development is seen as crucial for maintaining public trust and ensuring the responsible use of this powerful technology.
Industry analysts predict continued exponential growth in the AI sector. A recent report by McKinsey Global Institute estimates that AI could contribute up to $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030. This growth will necessitate a significant influx of skilled professionals, further emphasizing the importance of programs like the one at UW-Whitewater. The demand isn't limited to traditional tech roles either; AI skills are becoming increasingly valuable across a wide range of industries, including healthcare, finance, manufacturing, and agriculture.
The launch of this AI major is part of a wider trend across the US, with universities racing to meet the growing demand for AI specialists. However, the UW System's holistic approach - encompassing education, research, and ethical considerations - positions it as a potential leader in this rapidly evolving field. The system is also exploring partnerships with Wisconsin businesses to provide students with internship opportunities and ensure the curriculum remains aligned with industry needs.
Applications for the UW-Whitewater Artificial Intelligence Bachelor of Science program will be accepted starting in March. Prospective students are encouraged to visit [ https://www.uww.edu/academics/programs/artificial-intelligence-bs ] for more information.
