Professor GQ Max Lu to step down as President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Surrey

  • The University Council has appointed Professor Tim Dunne, currently Provost and Senior Vice-President, to the role of Interim President and Vice-Chancellor with effect from Professor Lu's departure. There will be an open and formal process to appoint Professor Lu's permanent successor.

Professor GQ Max Lu will step down from his role as President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Surrey at the end of the 2023/24 academic year to return to his academic roots in Australia. During his tenure, which began in 2016, he has led the university through significant changes including the development of a new strategic plan, the establishment of the Surrey Institute for People-Centred Artificial Intelligence, and the creation of the 5G Innovation Centre. His leadership has also seen the university rise in global rankings, enhance its research profile, and foster international partnerships. Professor Lu expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve and highlighted the university's growth in research, innovation, and its commitment to social responsibility. The University of Surrey will now begin the search for his successor.
