R Chidambaram, architect of India's nuclear weapons programme passes away

  • New Delhi/Mumbai: Rajagopala Chidambaram, the architect of India's nuclear weapons program who played a key role in the atomic tests at Pokhran in 1974 and 1998, passed away in Mumbai on Saturday morning. He was 88.

Rajagopala Chidambaram, a distinguished nuclear physicist and former principal scientific advisor to the Government of India, passed away at the age of 89 in Chennai on January 4, 2025. Known for his significant contributions to India's nuclear program, Chidambaram played a pivotal role in the 1974 Pokhran nuclear test and the 1998 Pokhran-II tests. He was also instrumental in the development of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and served as its chairman. His academic journey began at the Indian Institute of Science, followed by a PhD from Cambridge University. Chidambaram was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian honor, in 1999 for his contributions to science and technology. His death marks the end of an era in India's scientific community, leaving behind a legacy of advancements in nuclear science and technology.
