DSU Names Bruce Shelburne as Next President
Locale: UNITED STATES

Madison, SD - March 30, 2026 - Dakota State University (DSU) today announced the appointment of Bruce Shelburne as its next president, marking a significant transition for the South Dakota institution. Shelburne will assume the presidency on July 1, 2026, succeeding Dr. David Flatt, who has led DSU with distinction since 2016 and is entering retirement.
The selection of Shelburne culminates a comprehensive nationwide search undertaken by the DSU Board of Trustees. The board sought a leader who not only possessed a strong academic background but also a clear vision for propelling DSU forward, particularly in its nationally recognized areas of expertise.
"After a rigorous and thorough search process, the Board is thrilled to welcome Dr. Bruce Shelburne to Dakota State University," stated Board President Pam Nelson. "His experience, leadership qualities, and commitment to student success perfectly align with the values and aspirations of our university. We are confident he will build upon the remarkable progress made under Dr. Flatt's leadership."
Shelburne arrives at DSU with an impressive pedigree, currently serving as Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Mississippi. In this role, he has overseen all academic programs, research initiatives, and faculty affairs, demonstrating a proven ability to manage complex university systems and foster a thriving academic environment. His work at Ole Miss included the implementation of several successful STEM initiatives designed to increase student participation and research funding.
"I am honored to join Dakota State University and its exceptional community," Shelburne expressed in a statement released by the university. "I am excited to work alongside the talented faculty, staff, and students to advance the university's mission and further its standing as a leader in cybersecurity and innovation."
DSU has carved a unique niche for itself as a nationally recognized leader in cybersecurity education and research. The university's commitment to this critical field is reflected in its specialized programs, state-of-the-art facilities, and partnerships with government agencies and private sector organizations. Shelburne's emphasis on cybersecurity is particularly noteworthy, signaling a continued dedication to maintaining and expanding DSU's prominence in this area. He has previously spoken about the growing need for cybersecurity professionals and the importance of preparing students to meet the challenges of a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
Beyond cybersecurity, Shelburne also highlighted a commitment to innovation and experiential learning. DSU is increasingly focusing on providing students with hands-on learning opportunities, internships, and research experiences to better prepare them for the workforce. This emphasis on practical application is a key differentiator for DSU and a draw for students seeking real-world skills. Shelburne has indicated that he intends to explore new avenues for expanding these opportunities, potentially through increased collaborations with regional businesses and industries.
Community engagement is also a priority for the incoming president. DSU plays a vital role in the Madison community and the broader South Dakota region, and Shelburne recognizes the importance of fostering strong relationships with local stakeholders. He plans to actively engage with community leaders, alumni, and residents to ensure that DSU continues to be a valuable asset to the state.
Dr. Flatt's tenure at DSU has been marked by significant growth and achievement. He oversaw the expansion of academic programs, increased research funding, and the construction of new facilities, including the CyberLab, a state-of-the-art cybersecurity research center. His leadership has positioned DSU for continued success, and Shelburne acknowledges the solid foundation upon which he will build. A formal transition period is planned to ensure a seamless handover of leadership.
The announcement of Shelburne's appointment has been met with widespread enthusiasm from faculty, staff, and students. Many are eager to learn more about his vision for the future of DSU and how he plans to build upon the university's existing strengths. The university plans to host a series of town hall meetings in the coming months to provide opportunities for the campus community to interact with Shelburne and share their perspectives.
