Verizon Wireless' HopeLine Phone Recycling Program Offers Simple, Convenient and Environmentally Friendly Way to Generate Funding for Community Non-Profits

LAUREL, Md., Dec. 20, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- As 2011 draws to a close, the nation's largest wireless provider, Verizon Wireless, wants to send thanks to everyone who donated their old wireless phones to the company's [ HopeLine® ] program.  In Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia, those contributions fueled donations to domestic violence prevention nonprofits totaling $175,000

Grants provided by the company ranged from $1,000 to $40,000 and supported a diverse array of projects, including the purchase and installation of video technology at the Montgomery County, Md., [ Family Justice Center ] that allows domestic violence's youngest victims, children, to participate in legal proceedings from a safe environment; funding to support the Mid-Shore Council on Family Violence in Denton, Md., to create a Client Needs Fund to assist victims in five counties to pay for medicine, travel expenses, personal items, one-time utility payments, books and back-to-school expenses; and support for female ex-offenders with a history of sexual assault or domestic violence in southwest Virginia for counseling and re-entry services.

"At this time of year, it's important to remember those non-profit groups that are making such a difference across our region," said Mike Maiorana, regional president, Verizon Wireless in Maryland, Virginia and D.C.  "These community anchors have been tremendously affected by budget cuts and a challenging economy, and we're proud of our customers and other partners who have donated their old phones to HopeLine so these groups can continue their vital work."

HopeLine, Verizon Wireless' national phone recycling program, collects no-longer-used wireless phones and accessories, any make, any carrier and turns those phones into cash donations for domestic violence prevention groups.  Since 2001, HopeLine has provided more than $10 million in cash grants for domestic violence prevention organizations across the country.
