Nortel: Nortel CVAS Sets the Stage for Next Generation Media Gateway at Supercomm 2009

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS--(Marketwire - Oct. 21, 2009) - Supercomm 2009 show attendees will get a preview of the latest Nortel(1) (OTCBB:NRTLQ) Carrier VoIP and Application Solutions (CVAS) innovations that tackle challenges service providers face as they expand their existing VoIP networks with SIP access from SMB and residential clients and extend to SIP peering across any IP access type - including wireline, broadband, wireless and cable networks.

Introduced at the Supercomm tradeshow this week, Nortel's new Border Control Media Gateway 1000 (BCMG 1000) is an IP-to-IP session aware media gateway that leverages Nortel's industry-leading IPR and patents to increase service provider competitive advantage by improving voice quality and security. The Nortel Transit and Multimedia Interconnect solution equips service providers with advanced IP media inter-working, encryption and IP voice enhancements, which improve the subscriber experience and allow users to communicate with anyone over IP, regardless of the other user's device or media type.

Nortel's BCMG 1000 IP-to-IP media gateway and SIP border control Interconnect solution provides end-to-end SIP interoperability between legacy, NGN and IMS terminals, traffic policing and marking, and delivers more secure connections. The BCMG 1000 enhances the company's Transit and Multimedia Interconnect solution and supports service providers' ability to:

- Tackle challenges with multi-access IP network convergence by using powerful transcoding and media adaption techniques to allow subscribers to communicate with anyone over IP, regardless of the other user's device or media type.

- Improve quality of voice by eliminating echoes, background noise, and other impairments.

- Provide security measures to block hackers and other malicious use, such as denial of service attacks, spoofing, service theft, fraud, and eaves dropping.

- Enable more deployment flexibility because it is a Linux-based hardware independent solution and, it can interoperate with any standards-compliant Call Server, Softswitch, SIP application server and/or network media node.

- Reduce operational expenses by: eliminating the need to upgrade or replace older legacy CPE because the solution enables the connectivity to support evolving network; and managing an IP-IP media gateway and a session border controller simultaneously while cost effectively support both functions in one.

Nortel's BCMG 1000 is currently available for customer trials and is expected to be generally available in the second half of 2010.
