NEWARK, CA--(Marketwire - January 13, 2009) - Socket Mobile, Inc. (NASDAQ: [ SCKT ]), an innovative provider of mobile productivity solutions, today announced that the police force in the German federal state of Lower Saxony has deployed the Socket SoMo 650 handheld computer for monitoring street side commercial truck controls. The SoMo 650 will help the police officers track data from digital tachographs installed in commercial trucks on the autobahn. Socket partner, Softwarebüro Zauner & Partner, implemented the handheld computer system, enabling a more efficient and easy to use durable solution.

The Lower Saxony police have currently deployed 75 SoMo 650 handheld computers. Using the SoMo 650 the street police will be able to gain access to the digital tachograph installed in commercial trucks. In the European Union, tachographs are mandatory for vehicles allowed to carry a total weight of over 3.5 tons and vehicles built to carry at least 9 passengers, if the vehicle is used for commercial purposes. Since May 2006, tachographs are required to be digital.

The tachograph records data about the vehicle's speed, the duration of its active travel time compared to stationary and other technical information. German laws and regulations require records of these in case of traffic violations or accident investigations. Additionally, drivers of commercial trucks or other commercial vehicles are required to keep driving records for proof of work purposes. The data from the tachographs is transferred from the SoMo 650 handheld computer to the servers at the police station via a cabled connection, and stored in their records. The adaptability of the Socket solution provides the police a more efficient method of tracking traffic violations and an extendable solution that can be used for years to come.

"Our policemen need to be very flexible and precise during street side controls to do an efficient job," said Frank Rex at the Lower Saxony Police. "With the SoMo 650, we've found a solution that offers the required portability, yet with the durability, ease-of-use, expandability and secure data transfer options we need for this process. Socket is constantly advancing the solution so we won't have to switch to another device on a long-term basis."

"Budgets are tight and both public and private organizations have to look for solutions that can be used on a long-term basis and offer a high return on investment," said Bob Zink, senior vice president of worldwide sales and marketing for Socket. "Our SoMo 650 can target solutions exactly to meet this need. Working with Lower Saxony's police force, we are pleased to have developed a solution to help streamline processes and maintain order on the autobahn."
