GTCC Expands AI & Data Science Programs, Boosts Regional Workforce
Locale: UNITED STATES

Greensboro, NC - April 1st, 2026 - Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) is making a significant investment in the future of the regional workforce, unveiling a dramatically expanded suite of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Science programs today. Building upon its initial foray into AI education announced in 2026, GTCC is now poised to become a leading educational hub for the rapidly evolving tech sector in the Piedmont Triad and beyond.
The college's expansion goes far beyond simply adding a few courses. GTCC has unveiled three new associate degree programs: an Associate of Applied Science in AI and Machine Learning, an Associate of Science in Data Science, and a new, innovative Associate of Applied Science in AI-Driven Cybersecurity. Furthermore, a series of stackable micro-credentials allow individuals to upskill quickly in specific AI areas, like prompt engineering, AI-assisted data visualization, and responsible AI development.
"When we initially launched our first AI courses, we anticipated demand," explained Dr. Evelyn Reed, GTCC's Provost and VP of Academic Affairs. "However, the response has been overwhelming. Businesses across all sectors are clamoring for employees who understand and can apply AI, not just theoretically. We've listened to those needs and responded with a comprehensive curriculum designed to produce job-ready professionals."
The new programs aren't just theoretical exercises. GTCC has doubled down on its partnerships with regional employers, including tech firms like SAS Institute (headquartered in Cary, NC), healthcare providers Cone Health and Novant Health, and manufacturers like Mack Trucks. These collaborations aren't limited to internships; GTCC is pioneering a "co-op" model where students rotate between semesters of coursework and extended, paid work experiences directly within partner companies. This ensures students gain practical, hands-on skills aligned with industry demands.
"The co-op model has been a game-changer," stated Marcus Chen, CEO of Triad AI Solutions, a local company specializing in AI-powered logistics. "We've been able to integrate GTCC students into our project teams, giving them real-world challenges to solve and providing them with mentorship. It's a win-win - we get access to talented, eager learners, and GTCC students gain invaluable experience."
Beyond technical skills, GTCC is placing a strong emphasis on the ethical implications of AI. The AI Ethics module, now a core component of all AI programs, explores issues of bias, fairness, privacy, and accountability. The college has also established a dedicated AI Ethics Research Center, focusing on developing best practices for responsible AI deployment in various industries. This reflects a growing national concern that AI development must be guided by strong ethical principles.
Dr. Reed highlighted the college's commitment to accessibility. "We understand that many potential students may be intimidated by the perceived complexity of AI. That's why we've designed these programs to be accessible to students of all backgrounds, regardless of their prior experience. We offer flexible learning options, including online and hybrid courses, and provide comprehensive support services to ensure student success." GTCC is also actively recruiting from underrepresented groups in STEM fields, offering scholarships and mentorship programs to promote diversity in the AI workforce.
The economic impact of GTCC's AI initiative is projected to be substantial. A recent study by the Piedmont Triad Research Park estimates that the program will generate over $50 million in regional economic activity over the next five years and create an estimated 500 new high-skilled jobs. As AI continues to reshape industries, GTCC is strategically positioning itself - and the region - to capitalize on this transformative technology. Enrollment for the fall semester is already exceeding expectations, signaling a bright future for GTCC and the emerging AI workforce.
