Wipro and IISc Forge a New Frontier in Artificial Intelligence Research

Bengaluru, 27 November 2025 – In a landmark announcement today, global IT services giant Wipro Limited and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru have joined forces to establish a dedicated Artificial Intelligence (AI) research hub. The collaboration, announced during a joint press conference at the IISc campus, is aimed at accelerating cutting‑edge AI innovation that can be seamlessly translated into industrial solutions across India’s manufacturing, healthcare, and smart‑city sectors.

A Synergistic Partnership

Wipro, which has been investing heavily in AI for the last decade, cited its need for deeper academic rigour and fresh talent pipelines. “IISc’s research excellence in machine learning, computer vision, and natural language processing is unparalleled in India,” said Ashok J. D. Rao, Chairman of Wipro. “By co‑creating a research ecosystem with IISc, we can develop solutions that are not only technologically advanced but also grounded in the societal needs of our country.”

From the IISc side, Prof. N. Venkata Subramaniam, Director of the Institute, emphasized the importance of industry collaboration for real‑world impact. “The partnership with Wipro opens up a channel for our researchers and students to tackle problems at scale,” he noted. “It also brings in significant funding, state‑of‑the‑art infrastructure, and a platform for knowledge exchange.”

Scope of the Research Centre

The newly formed centre, tentatively named Wipro–IISc AI Innovation Lab (WI‑AIL), will focus on three core domains:

  1. AI for Industry 4.0 – Developing predictive maintenance models, intelligent robotics, and adaptive supply‑chain optimization tools that can be deployed across Wipro’s industrial clients.
  2. Healthcare AI – Leveraging computer‑vision algorithms for early disease detection, NLP models for clinical decision support, and data‑driven tele‑medicine platforms.
  3. AI Ethics & Governance – Crafting robust frameworks for bias mitigation, privacy preservation, and regulatory compliance, aligning with India’s forthcoming AI policy guidelines.

A 5‑year, ₹50 crore (US$6.3 million) joint funding package will support these initiatives. Funding will be split evenly, with Wipro contributing a technology infrastructure grant and IISc providing a grant for research scholarships and faculty appointments. The ministry of Electronics and IT will oversee the funding flow, ensuring compliance with national research and development (R&D) standards.

Infrastructure & Human Capital

WI‑AIL will occupy a newly built 5,000‑square‑foot research complex on the IISc campus, complete with high‑performance computing clusters, GPU‑accelerated servers, and a dedicated lab for robotics and embedded systems. The centre will host 12 research faculty from IISc and 8 senior data scientists from Wipro, alongside over 30 graduate students working on joint thesis projects.

“We have a unique blend of academic depth and industry experience,” said Dr. P. S. Arun, Head of Research at Wipro’s AI Solutions Division. “This will enable us to prototype solutions quickly, test them in real‑time industrial environments, and bring them to market faster than traditional research pipelines.”

Early Success Stories

During the announcement, Wipro and IISc showcased a pilot project that has already demonstrated tangible results: an AI‑driven predictive maintenance platform for Wipro’s automotive clients. By integrating IoT sensor data with machine‑learning models, the platform can forecast component failures up to 30 days in advance, saving clients an estimated ₹8 crore annually in unplanned downtime. The project was spearheaded by IISc’s Professor Subramaniam and Wipro’s Dr. Arun, and is now slated for a commercial rollout in 2026.

Another promising initiative is a smart‑city dashboard developed for Bengaluru’s municipal corporation. By fusing data from traffic cameras, waste‑management sensors, and citizen‑reported incidents, the AI dashboard provides real‑time analytics for traffic routing and waste collection optimization, reducing city‑wide carbon emissions by an estimated 12%.

Stakeholder Engagement & Broader Impact

The WI‑AIL will not only serve the Wipro–IISc partnership but will also act as a knowledge hub for the Bengaluru ecosystem. Wipro’s AI Innovation Incubator, located adjacent to the lab, will offer mentoring and seed funding to start‑ups that emerge from the research projects. The lab will also host annual AI hackathons, inviting students from IISc, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), and other local universities to collaborate on open‑source AI tools.

In a broader policy context, the partnership aligns with the National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2025, which prioritizes industry‑academia collaboration, workforce upskilling, and the creation of AI ecosystems across Indian metros. The Ministry of Electronics and IT has already signalled support for similar collaborations, underscoring the strategic importance of the Wipro–IISc initiative.

Looking Ahead

The Wipro–IISc AI Innovation Lab marks a new chapter in India’s quest to become a global leader in artificial intelligence. By combining IISc’s research prowess with Wipro’s industrial reach, the partnership promises to deliver AI solutions that are scalable, ethical, and directly responsive to the country’s socio‑economic challenges. Over the next five years, the centre will aim to:

  • Publish at least 30 peer‑reviewed research papers in top AI conferences (NeurIPS, ICML, CVPR, ACL).
  • Commercialize 5 AI products for manufacturing, healthcare, and smart‑city sectors.
  • Create 200 high‑skill AI jobs in Bengaluru, boosting the local talent pool.

As Bengaluru continues to cement its reputation as India’s “Silicon Valley,” the Wipro–IISc partnership underscores how industry and academia can jointly drive technological progress, stimulate economic growth, and ultimately deliver smarter, more inclusive solutions for society.
