Over 10,000 exploding stars catalogued by groundbreaking Zwicky Transient Facility

The Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) has significantly advanced our understanding of the cosmos by discovering over 10,000 supernovae, making it the most prolific supernova hunter to date. Located at the Palomar Observatory in California, ZTF uses a wide-field camera to scan the entire visible sky every two nights, capturing transient astronomical events like supernovae, which are exploding stars. This facility has not only increased the number of known supernovae but has also contributed to various fields of astronomy by providing data on stellar explosions, the expansion rate of the universe, and the behavior of matter and energy. The ZTF's success is attributed to its automated system that quickly identifies changes in the night sky, allowing for real-time alerts to astronomers worldwide, thus enabling follow-up observations and detailed studies of these cosmic events.
