Volvo propulsion engineer Stefan Molen says that while the supercharger in the 2025 Volvo XC90 B5 and B6 models isn't new, adding the Miller cycle makes it more efficient. "Updating the engine with the Miller cycle results in lower fuel consumption by four percent, which is quite a bit," he says.
The 2025 Volvo XC90 introduces a new engine technology known as the Miller cycle, which aims to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. This technology modifies the traditional Otto cycle by closing the intake valve later in the compression stroke, which reduces the effective compression ratio while maintaining a high expansion ratio. This results in less pumping loss, better thermal efficiency, and lower fuel consumption.
