The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released a report highlighting the significant issue of textile waste, marking the first time the agency has formally acknowledged this environmental challenge. The report, titled "From Fiber to Final Disposition: Textiles at the End of Their Useful Life," outlines the lifecycle of textiles from production to disposal, emphasizing the growing problem of textile waste due to fast fashion trends and increased consumption. It notes that the U.S. generates about 11.3 million tons of textile waste annually, with only 15% being recycled or reused, while the majority ends up in landfills. The EPA's acknowledgment comes at a time when there is increasing pressure on the fashion industry to address its environmental impact, pushing for more sustainable practices in production, consumption, and disposal of textiles. The report calls for better data collection, increased recycling efforts, and consumer education to mitigate the environmental footprint of textiles.
