OLATHE, Kan.--([ BUSINESS WIRE ])--Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN), the global leader in satellite navigation, announced today that the nvi 1690 is now available in Canada and utilizes Rogers Communications Inc.a™s national network to access data from Garmina™s nLink! service. As a Rogers Connecteda" device, the nvi 1690 provides direct links to certain online information like Googlea" local search, traffic, weather, movie listings, flight status, white pages and safety cameras. These same dynamic features are available when Canadian customers travel to the U.S., and the nvi 1690 with Rogers is the first personal navigation device (PND) to make it easy and affordable to roam across the Canadian and U.S. border.
"The nvi 1690 is a powerful time-saving tool and the dynamic content helps redefine on-the-go navigation for consumers by keeping them connected and informed"
aThe nvi 1690 is a powerful time-saving tool and the dynamic content helps redefine on-the-go navigation for consumers by keeping them connected and informed,a said Dan Bartel, Garmina™s vice president of worldwide sales. aThe Canadian version of the nvi 1690 comes with one-year of free nLink! service, and is the first PND in Canada to offer such a broad array of dynamic content that is included in the purchase price of the device.a
The nvi 1690 with nLink! has the most comprehensive point of interests (POIs) search capabilities offered by any PND thanks to the implementation of Google local search and white page telephone listings. Googlea™s local search brings online POIs to customersa™ fingertips and lets them search for destinations by name or key words just like they are accustomed to doing on their personal computer. In addition, Garmin has created a aquick searcha feature that lets users search via categories like food, lodging and fuel, rather than typing a word or phrase into the search box. Detailed search results are displayed for many POIs including a location description, business address, phone number and popularity rating. Customers can also use the nLink! white page telephone listing feature to search for a persona™s street address by their first name, last name or phone number.
In addition to the local search capabilities, Garmin nLink! offers a plethora of other online services. Local events and movie listings help customers find interesting activities wherever they might travel. Real-time flight status takes the stress out of traveling to the airport with up-to-the minute arrival and departure information for major air carriers. And the Garmin nLink! traffic feature provides the best-in-class information from NAVTEQ to help customers navigate in and around congestion.
Customers can also opt to use the nvi 1690a™s preloaded POI database to search for a location and then receive turn-by-turn, voice prompted directions to the destination. The nvi 1690 includes lane assist with junction view so drivers will see a realistic presentation of road signs and junctions along the route, as well as arrows that indicate the proper lane for navigation. These features make it easy to navigate unfamiliar intersections and exits because the nvi guides drivers to the correct lane for an approaching turn or exit. Map and traffic data is provided by NAVTEQa" a" a world leader in premium-quality mapping.
The nvi 1690 comes standard with ecoRoutea", an innovative application that helps customers stretch their dollars and conserve fuel by creating routes that are optimized for using less fuel. When a user selects the aless fuela option, the nvi will determine a fuel efficient route based on fuel consumption rates, estimated driving speeds and vehicle acceleration data. Customers can then develop better driving habits by reviewing the results of ecoRoutea™s Fuel Report and Mileage Report.
The nvi 1690 also has Bluetooth® Wireless Technology that makes it possible to receive and place phone calls directly from the nvi. It can be paired with over 200 Bluetooth enabled phones, and a driver can retrieve and dial numbers using a supported phonea™s contact list, the phonea™s call history log, or the nvia™s preloaded points of interest database.
The Canadian version of the nvi 1690 has preloaded maps of North America and is available in Canada immediately for a manufacturera™s suggested retail price of $399.99 ($429.99 CAD). In Canada, the first one-year of Garmin nLink! is free, and after that, the subscription renewal price for data services and nLink! is $60.00 for the year ($65.00 CAD). Canadian customers who plan to use the nvi 1690a™s nLink! services in the U.S. can also add roaming capabilities throughout the U.S. for a nominal fee of $5.00 per month ($9.99 CAD).
Garmina™s Canadian launch leverages Rogers M2M QuickLink ([ www.rogers.com/business ]), powered by Jasper Wireless, offering a turnkey platform enabling market entry and automated management capabilities for a wide range of connected devices.
