Moorestown Breaks Ground on Playground Revitalization

MOORESTOWN, NJ - March 25th, 2026 - The sounds of construction have replaced the echoes of laughter at William Allen Playground as Moorestown Township officially breaks ground on a much-anticipated revitalization project. Announced earlier this week, the project will see the complete replacement of the existing, aging playground structure with a modern, accessible, and safe play space for the community's children. The Moorestown Township Council unanimously approved the initiative at their meeting on March 18th, signaling a strong commitment to enhancing recreational opportunities for residents.

For years, William Allen Playground has served as a central gathering point for families in Moorestown. However, the existing equipment has fallen into disrepair, posing potential safety concerns and failing to meet the needs of a growing and increasingly diverse population of young residents. The new playground aims to address these issues, offering a stimulating and inclusive environment where children of all abilities can play, learn, and socialize.

"We're excited to offer the children of Moorestown a state-of-the-art playground," stated Council President Matthew Smeltz. "This isn't just about replacing old equipment; it's an investment in the well-being of our community and the future of our children."

The new design emphasizes both fun and safety. Township officials have confirmed the playground will feature a variety of modern equipment, catering to a wide range of ages and developmental stages. This includes (but isn't limited to) climbing structures, slides, swings, and interactive play panels. Crucially, the design incorporates universally accessible elements, ensuring children with disabilities can fully participate in the play experience. Features will include ramps, transfer stations, and specialized play equipment designed for inclusive play.

The choice of safety surfacing is also a key component of the project. The township is opting for a poured-in-place rubber surface, known for its superior shock absorption and accessibility. This material not only minimizes the risk of injuries but also provides a smooth and stable surface for children using mobility devices.

Funding a Community Vision

The approximately $175,000 project isn't solely reliant on township funds. A diversified funding strategy has been employed to minimize the burden on local taxpayers. The township allocated $80,000 from the Parks and Recreation budget, while a successful grant application to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's Green Spaces program contributed $50,000. The remaining funds will be sourced through ongoing community donations and fundraising efforts spearheaded by the "Friends of Moorestown Parks" volunteer group. Local businesses have also stepped up, with several offering in-kind donations of materials and labor.

"The support from the community has been phenomenal," added Smeltz. "It really demonstrates how much residents value our parks and recreational facilities."

Project Timeline and Community Impact The project is currently on schedule for completion by late May or early June 2026, just in time for the summer months. During construction, the existing playground will be fully closed to ensure public safety. The township has indicated that updates on the project's progress will be posted on the Moorestown Township website and social media channels.

Beyond providing a safe and enjoyable play space, the revitalized William Allen Playground is expected to have a broader positive impact on the community. Parks and playgrounds are vital for promoting physical activity, social interaction, and cognitive development in children. They also serve as important community hubs, fostering a sense of belonging and civic pride. The updated playground will also contribute to the overall aesthetic appeal of the William Allen Park, enhancing the quality of life for all residents.

Looking ahead, the Township Council has indicated that they are actively exploring options for upgrading other parks and recreational facilities throughout Moorestown. This includes potential improvements to walking trails, athletic fields, and community centers. The revitalization of William Allen Playground serves as a model for future projects, emphasizing the importance of community engagement, sustainable funding, and a commitment to providing high-quality recreational opportunities for all.
