Gov Makinde tasks FG, states to invest more in science, technological education

  • By Demola Akinyemi, Ilorin Oyo state governor, Engr Oluseyi Makinde has tasked both the Federal and State governments to invest heavily in Science and Technology in order to catch up with other developing nations of the world.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has urged the Federal Government and other states in Nigeria to increase investments in science and technological education to drive national development. Speaking at the 2024 Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) Expo in Ibadan, Makinde emphasized the critical role of science and technology in economic growth, job creation, and solving societal challenges. He highlighted the need for a shift from resource-based to knowledge-based economies, pointing out that countries like South Korea and Singapore have thrived by prioritizing these sectors. Makinde also called for enhanced collaboration between government, academia, and the private sector to foster innovation, research, and development. He stressed the importance of providing adequate funding, infrastructure, and incentives to encourage young Nigerians to pursue careers in science and technology, thereby positioning Nigeria as a hub for innovation in Africa.
