Infinera: Infinera Expands R&D With New Ottawa Design Center
Published in Science and Technology on Friday, September 18th 2009 at 9:16 GMT by Market Wire

SUNNYVALE, CA--(Marketwire - September 18, 2009) - Infinera (
Infinera's 400 Gigabit/second (Gb/s) photonic integrated circuit (PIC) is in development today at Infinera's development centers and fab facility in Sunnyvale, California. Future generations of Infinera optical systems will be designed to take ever-increasing advantage of advanced signal processing technologies to process vast amounts of data transmitted and received by these and higher capacity PICs. Dr. Kuang-Tsan Wu, who has joined Infinera to lead the Ottawa team, is one of the world's foremost experts in designing optical systems using high-speed electronics and advanced modulation formats. Prior to joining Infinera, Dr. Wu led the team that architected Nortel's 40 Gb/s coherent receivers with advanced signal processing technologies. Infinera is currently advertising for a small number of additional engineers to join the Ottawa team. (Please see [ http://www.infinera.com/career/ourjobs.html ] for further details.)
"I'm very excited to join Infinera and work alongside some of the top engineers in the industry and inside the most innovative optical company in the world," commented Dr. Kuang-Tsan Wu. "The combination of the PIC and advanced signal processing technologies provides an opportunity to create a significant disruption in future optical systems," he added.
Advancing Optical Frontiers at ECOC
Infinera will speak at three events at next week's ECOC trade show, highlighting technical advances in Infinera's photonic integration technology and the disruptive impact photonic integration has exerted upon optical networks today and is expected to continue to exert in the future. Infinera Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer Dr. Dave Welch will participate in two workshops on Sunday, September 20. The first will address "Energy Efficiency in Next Generation Core Networks and Switches" while the second will address "Monolithic and Hybrid Photonic Integrated Transceivers for Advanced Modulation Formats -- PIC Technologies for Advanced Modulation Formats." Also on the ECOC conference program, Infinera's Mehrdad Ziari will discuss "Large Scale Integration of Photonic Integrated Circuits on Indium Phosphide and High-Index-Contrast Si Platforms."
The common theme running through all these Infinera presentations will be the dramatic benefits photonic integration yields in terms of cost, space consumption, power consumption, scalability, and reliability of optical systems. With a fourfold increase in the capacity of PICs expected, Infinera's next generation systems will be designed to deliver further benefits in all these areas. ECOC takes place in Vienna, Austria from September 20-24. Further information is available at [ http://www.ecocexhibition.com/ ].
"We believe the advantages of photonic integration are even more compelling at 400 Gb/s than they have been at 100 Gb/s," commented Infinera CEO Jagdeep Singh. "Infinera believes that putting the best people together is key to finding the best solutions to the challenges facing the world's networks, and establishing ourselves in Ottawa increases our ability to recruit the best of the best."
The Infinera DTN is the first optical networking system powered by photonic integrated circuits. Deployed worldwide in long-haul and metro core networks, the Infinera DTN combines high-capacity DWDM transport, integrated digital bandwidth management, and GMPLS-powered service intelligence in a single platform.
