NSF begins reinstating probationary employees

Following the federal court ruling, the Office of Personnel Management told agencies to begin the reinstatement of unlawfully terminated probationary employees.
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has started reinstating employees who were previously on probation, following a directive from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) to revert to pre-COVID-19 hiring practices. This move comes after the NSF had paused the probationary period for new hires during the height of the global health crisis, which allowed employees to gain full federal employee status without completing the typical one-year probation. The reinstatement process involves notifying affected employees and providing them with a new timeline to complete their probation, ensuring they meet performance standards before gaining permanent status. This change aims to align with federal hiring norms while addressing the unique circumstances brought about by the health emergency.
